This is WHY I Sew — quilting for beginners
Madalyn from Kentucky (USA) 0
Today's feature is from Madalyn of Kentucky.
The recipients pictured are my daughters Kami and Ember. I've been actually sewing for 7 years.
When I was a younger my Mamaw would make me sit with her while she sewed, she wanted so badly for one of her 3 grand daughters to learn and I was the "chosen" one. To say I hated it would be an understatement. She finally gave up trying since she knew I had no interest in it. Mamaw passed away July 2009 and as we were going through her things my Aunt Beck brought me her sewing box and said
"Mamaw insisted you have her sewing box"
"Why? She knows I hate to sew, I have zero interest, give it to someone else." I said
"She INSISTED you have it, take it."
So I took the box and put it in a closet to collect dust.
In 2012 I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Kami. At the time my husband and I were not in the position to buy all these super cute clothes that all my friends were buying so I decided I needed to learn to sew.
I had a family friend, Sharon who knew my Mamaw very well, give me 1 lesson on how to use my machine and the rest was up to me.
I shed so many tears over missed time with my Mamaw and why I didn't take her up on sewing, as well as frustrated tears trying to learn on my own.
I can't tell you the number of times I've needed something for my project and knowing good and well whatever it is isn't in Mamaw's box but I look anyway and sure enough there it is. It feels like she keeps restocking it for me, and I'm sure she has a good chuckle while saying "I told you, one day you would want to know how to sew."
My actual inspiration may have been my precious baby girl and continues with my 2nd daughter, but it truly started when I was just a little girl spending my summers in a little white block house with my precious Mamaw. I love being able to gift my friends and their babies with quilts, burp cloths, car seat covers, and other sewn goodies just like my Mamaw did!
*The picture shows 3 quilts, the one behind the girls is one of the quilts my Mamaw made me, I vividly remember her letting me pick whatever I wanted out of all her patterns and I chose the Dutch Dolls.
Kami, age 7, is holding a quilt I made her when she was 3.
Ember, age 1, is holding the quilt I made her for her crib bedding.
I believe my quilt piecing abilities have come a long way but I still have so much to learn!"
What a great story! Thanks for sharing Madalyn.
